Depleted Uranium’s Legacy

Atomic_ Energy Authorily produced a

report estmating that 50 tons o dust rom
depleted uranium (DU) shell e behind in
the Iagisoil could cause up 0 500,000 extra
cancer deaths in the reglon over a 10-year
‘period. At least 300 tons of DU-tipped shells
(and possibly much more) were used against
ragi anks,

In 1997, 2 Britsh Ministry of Defense
paper - ecently leaked 1 the press - warmedl
that“inhalation ofinsaluble uranium dioxide
dust wil lead to accumulation in the lungs
with very slow clearance ~ if any” and noted
that “uranium dust inhalation. .. has been
shown 10 increase the risks of developing
lung, ymph and brain cancers”

‘These warnings are seriously at variance
with claims from Washington, London and
NATO that there is no proven nk between
DU and leukemia or other ilinesse. For cit-
zens’ organtzations and miliary personnel
‘who have fallen sck since serving n the Gull
or Kosovo, the no-proven-link argument
deliberately avoids the issue. NATO members
taly, Germany and Greece al have pushed
for a moratorium on the use of DU, but they
have been overruled by the US and Briain

Storage of DU —a by-product of the nuclear
fuel and reprocessing indusiris — i a grow-
ing problem. One British site slone has
20,000 tons of DU. Recycling DU into
ammunition is a perfect olution for the mili-
ary-industrial complex.

T the meantime, some companies can
wait. After an employee tipped of a national
newspaper, Biish Nuclear Fuels admitied It
‘was dumping 30,000 bags of nuclear waste
containing DU on a municipal waste heap
near Lancashire in northwest England. This is
aleged 0 pose  lonterm sk, because when
ranium decays it breaks down into rdon gas
~a well-known cause oflung cancer:

“The risk of leukemia rom depleied urani-
um ammunition may be 100 times greater
than ofcial estimates. Research by low-level
radiation specialist Chris Busby has shown
thatleukemia deaths ater the Chernoby dis-
aster were 100 times greater than predicied.
“The reason (which would apply equally in
) s that forecasts have been based on
short-term exposure (o intense blasis of
radioactive rays rather than on exposure 10
the longlived radioactive paricles created
‘when uranium shells explode and shater.
‘The European Pasliaments Green Group has.
called for & total ban on DU weapons.

In January, the British milary resumed
testfiring of DU shells at the Dundrennan fir-
ing range_near Kirkcudbright, Scotland.
Since 1982, more than 7,000 shells have
been fired a the range. The shells are meant
o land in th sea, but atiemps o reirieve are
not always successful and 28 tons of DU
shells have gone missing. An independent
nuclear consultant called this *a dissster
wating 10 bappen. Eventualy it wil end up
in the food chain. What they have done is
outrageous and iresponsible.” Environmen-
taliss ear that the shells could break up and
e washed ashore alter  storm, posing 1 haz-
ard for children playing on beaches.

Furthermore, up 10 24 shells have misfired
and hit the ground, generating clouds of DU
dust, In most cases these "malfunctioning
penetrators” buried themselves in the ground
and have not been recovered.
